By knowing the warning signs of furnace repair, you can prevent yourself from having to be in a freezing cold home while you wait for repairs.
Dust
If you have noticed an unusual amount of dust coming from the vents, this could be a sign that the furnace isn’t able to clean the air and could need repairs. Check and change the filters first and if you still notice the same problem, it’s time for a technician. Other signs of dust accumulation can be furniture cracking, drooping plants, or static shocks. This is the first thing mentioned in our furnace pre-startup checklist.
Strange Noises
If you hear squeaks or pops, something could have gotten loose and will need to be fixed. Another sign is if you hear the furnace blower running excessively, or turning on and off frequently. You can read more about our furnace cycling solutions for more information.
Yellow Pilot Light
If you take a look inside the unit and see that the pilot light is yellow instead of blue, then it could be a sign of carbon monoxide. Other signs of carbon monoxide could be streaks of soot around the unit, and excess moisture found on cold surfaces such as walls and windows. Family members may feel frequent headaches, disorientation, and nausea if carbon monoxide is present. This can be dangerous and it’s necessary to call a technician immediately.
Increased Heating Bills
If your bills have gone up lately it can be that your furnace is not operating at maximum efficiency and needs some repairs, in order to get back to normal.
The House Feels Dry
A furnace that needs repairs isn’t able to moisturize the air properly, so the house may feel dry or stale. If members of your family are suffering from allergies, or have dry skin, throats, and noses, this can be a sign.
Age
Your furnace isn’t going to last forever and most will last between 15 to 20 years. Check the serial number on the label to see how old it is and, if it’s getting up there in age, you should know it could break down soon.
